We continually listen to what publishers want and a repeat request is to support mobile users. The problem with mobile is that a large proportion of users use Twitter applications to do their tweeting. So today we would like to announce that we are supporting native retweeting on iPhone Android and Blackberry.
When we serve a retweet button to a mobile browser we switch it to a mobile specific version – and when the user clicks the button it sends them to a screen that lets them choose the mobile application that they use. And for users who do not yet have a Twitter app – we suggest a few to use. And if you do use Twitter on your mobile browser we can redirect to that as well. And of course we remember your choice for any further retweeting.
And just a quick reminder why we server over 120 million retweet buttons a day.
- 80% of our users now use our OAuth retweet button, this means that the user never leaves your website.
- Support for 15 Short URL services
- Support for RSS / Email buttons
- Free Retweet Analytics + PRO Analytics
- The recognised brand for retweeting
Look out for the new release early next week.
Today we have pushed two new and exciting updates to TweetTabs, which we hope everyone will love.
Sharing
We are very excited with the release of sharing, you can now easily share all your tabs with your friends, your bookmark your set of tabs so you can read them from any computer.
This opens up a whole load of new possibilities which you can do with TweetTabs.
Yip Support
Yip is a plugin for Firefox which allows website to push notifications, through Growl in MacOS and through Firefox in everything else. You can read more about the YIP plugin, and download it on the homepage.
TweetTabs uses Yip to push notifications to your desktop of new tweets. Every 60 seconds (if you have any notifications) a popup box will let you know how many new tweets there are and the break down of how many tweets each tab has got.
Other Notes
Last week we doubled the API capacity of TweetTabs, you can now have more tabs open which update faster.
IE7 Support, we are still working on getting TweetTabs to work correctly in IE7, in the meantime we recommend either updating to IE8 or using Firefox/Safari/Chrome/Opera.
Please let us know what you think and give us feedback on current features and what you would like to see in the future. Remember to follow @tweettabs on Twitter.
Today we launched http://TweetTabs.com, a new web-based twitter search + trends client. It is a simple, ultra fast and ultra leightweight interface to search and trends for Twitter. It also incorporates integration with TweetMeme to show previews of stories so you can be sure on what you are viewing. TweetTabs was born from ‘20% project’ created by our designer/JavaScript Samurai @dtsn (twitter.com/dtsn)
Core features
- tabs! open as many individual tabs with different search results in each
- Integration with the TweetMeme API to allow users to preview short url’s (including ability to one-click retweet if you are logged into tweetmeme)
- drag/drop each tab to change ordering
- one-click trending topics to open new ‘tabs’
- Retweet, View Profile, Reply to tweets (via the twitter web interface)
- Remembers your tabs between sessions
- Adaptive search poll rate (we make sure we don’t kill the twitter search even with lots of tabs open)
TweetTabs marks the start of a range of complimentary services that we will be launching over the coming months.
We are very excited to announce a new, minor release, of our Wordpress plugin. We now fully support Wordpress MU version 2.7 and above. We have also announced a small number of bug fixes listed below:
- The plugin will now correctly validate for XHTML websites
- Improved security for Wordpress 2.7 installations
- The ability to switch off the ping to TweetMeme when you update a post. This is only required if you regularly change the title of your post.
- Improved accessibility of the plugin settings pages
We would really like to thank Eric Caron (http://linkup.com) and Jason (http://residenttourist.com) for their help making the plugin Wordpress MU compatible.
This new version is now available as the development version which we welcome you to test and give us feedback on. You can download the development version from the download page.
Earlier today version 1.4.2 was accidentally pushed by Wordpress (even though it wasn’t a tagged released). If you didn’t mean to upgrade we recommend downgrading back to version 1.4.1.
We are currently getting a lot of reports regarding the Tweetmeme button being inaccurate across different pages of a website.
By default the button will pick up the address of the page it is on, it will then work out the the tweet count for that URL. For example if you show a button on your home page and on the main story page, these pages have two separate URL’s and thus will gain two separate tweet counts. This also causes a problem if you append anything onto your URL such as page numbers, Facebook connect settings or comment numbering.
We also see issues with sites that include the button on each blog post and then have all the posts shown on the home page. In this case, unless action is taken, when viewing the home page each button will have the same tweet count, as it will be using the URL for the homepage itself, not the indivual post URL.
You can easily solve this problem by specifying the URL for the correct page in JavaScript. An optional tweetmeme_url parameter is available, which overrides the buttons ability to pick up the URL of that page.
The best example of this is on the main Tweetmeme site. In the sidebar on every page we have the current number of tweets the URL http://tweetmeme.com has. We maintain a constant and accurate count by specifying the tweetmeme_url to be http://tweetmeme.com.
<script type="text/javascript">
tweetmeme_url = 'http://tweetmeme.com';
</script>
<script src="http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js" type="text/javascript"/>
If your site is a blog, it may be possible to have the tweetmeme_url set automatically. This is the main purpose of our WordPress plugin, and we also have an example of how it can be setup on Blogger.
You can find more information on the button and how to fully implement the tweetmeme_url on the Tweetmeme help site. If you are still having problems please refer to the discussion on our forums.
With the release of the tweetmeme API on March the 4th (blog post) we have decided to utilise our own API and build a nice widget. This widget can display the most popular or recent tweets in any of 4 categories.
The Editor
Even if you have no knowledge of programming we give you a really simple interface to create your own widget. You can easily change the colours, the width and the data which the widget fetches. The we give you a nice bit of JavaScript to integrate into your site.

Advanced Options
The widget is built on top of the tweetmeme API, so it is possible to completely customise the widget to your own use. Let us know in the comments where and how you decided to use the widget.
We have just released a Wordpress plugin which fully integrates the tweetmeme button with your Wordpress self hosted blog. It provides a easy way to integrate the retweet facility into your blog posts.
Why?
If you do want the button on every single post then copy/pasting the javascript can become tiresome, so to make things simple the plugin places the button either at the top or the bottom automatically, you can also override the styling.
Download/Install
You can download and find instructions on how to install the tweetmeme Wordpress plugin on the tweetmeme plugin page.
We have just release the mobile version of Tweetmeme, you can now access all the most popular links on twitter through your mobile device. So fire up your iPhone and head over to http://m.tweetmeme.com to try it all out.
Features
The mobile version doesn’t contain all the functionality of the main site, but we think we have got the important stuff in. It features our popular retweet button, so you can retweet on the move, plus it shows you the title and the original tweeter of the story. All of this in a easy to use interface complete with paging.
Feedback
You may of also noticed that this morning we added a feedback widget to the left hand side of all the tweetmeme pages. Please leave us feedback through the form, we really want to improve how you use tweetmeme.
