To find out how you can use TweetMeme Pro please take a look at our website or sign-up.

* – Features also included in the standard TweetMeme Retweet Button.

Mobile Retweeting

choice_pageWe continually listen to what publishers want and a repeat request is to support mobile users. The problem with mobile is that a large proportion of users use Twitter applications to do their tweeting. So today we would like to announce that we are supporting native retweeting on iPhone Android and Blackberry.

When we serve a retweet button to a mobile browser we switch it to a mobile specific version – and when the user clicks the button it sends them to a screen that lets them choose the mobile application that they use. And for users who do not yet have a Twitter app – we suggest a few to use. And if you do use Twitter on your mobile browser we can redirect to that as well. And of course we remember your choice for any further retweeting.

And just a quick reminder why we server over 120 million retweet buttons a day.

  • 80% of our users now use our OAuth retweet button, this means that the user never leaves your website.
  • Support for 15 Short URL services
  • Support for RSS / Email buttons
  • Free Retweet Analytics + PRO Analytics
  • The recognised brand for retweeting

Look out for the new release early next week.

Comment: II found this on the Twetmeme Blog . It basically means that if you are logged on here and happen to tweet from anywhere via the Tweetmeme buton, the tweet is posted automatically without intervention from you.

    Quote follows:
The current retweet button is a clever little thing – it can redirect you to Twitter to retweet but also if your logged into TweetMeme (via OAuth) it sends the tweet behind the scenes and leaves you on the site you were currently browsing, this we call ‘one-click retweeting’. The downside is that Javascript can only live in certain places on the web, i.e. in a web browser.

TweetMeme Comments Competition

competition_small

Today we are launching a shiny new TweetMeme competition. As many of you know, we recently released our new TweetMeme platform which included our comments system. Well just to get you all started using the system and to see how you find the comment system we thought we’d have a little fun in the form of our comments competition.  Here’s how it will work.

The Best Comment

What we are looking for is the best comment that you can create around one of the posts on our site.  The comment must be created on our system and re-tweeted through the site.  The individual with the highest number of re-tweets of a comment will win our competition.

How to enter

STEP 1 – Login

Login to TweetMeme (this requires a Twitter account – if you don’t have one? go here

STEP 2 – Find

Find a story that you find interesting – click on comments – or the ‘more’ button.

STEP 3 – Comment

Leave a comment and have it send it back to Twitter (this is the default behaviour) – get your friends to retweet your comment.

STEP 4 – Spread the word

Spread the word about the competition and about your comments on our site! Lets see how far and wide you can get your cool and interesting comments. This competition will be running for 7 days 1 month from today and we will do a daily update here on the blog on who our top 10 comment re-tweeters are! We will announce the winner and runners up on the 8th October around 5pm GMT.

PS the most amusing comment that I see may also get a sneaky little prize too! And anyone I see just spamming will get removed! Spam is EVIL!

What could you win?

First Place – An EEE PC Netbook, a TweetMeme Tshirt and stickers.

Second Place – An IPod Touch 16gb , a TweetMeme Tshirt and stickers.

Third Place – A Flip HD, a TweetMeme Tshirt and stickers.

5 Runners up will get a TweetMeme Tshirt and stickers.

Comments Video Preview

I was testing the new site tonight and thought I would share a quick (5 min) video of using the comments. Look forward to getting your feedback and also putting this baby live! (click in bottom-right corner of video to get the high-res version.)

More Buttons, More Retweet

We never rest on our laurels here at TweetMeme HQ and have been beavering away on a range of improvements. I wanted to give you a sneak peak at a few new buttons launching next week.

Firstly one big change we have already made is to remove the (via @tweetmeme) from the end of any retweets. This will give a little more room at the end of tweets to be retweeted again.

Image Button

imagebutton

The current retweet button is a clever little thing – it can redirect you to Twitter to retweet but also if your logged into TweetMeme (via OAuth) it sends the tweet behind the scenes and leaves you on the site you were currently browsing, this we call ‘one-click retweeting’. The downside is that Javascript can only live in certain places on the web, i.e. in a web browser.

We think there are lots of other places you may want to get retweeted from so we have come up with ‘image buttons’. These look identical to the current retweet button (an example is on the right) with the same live-retweet count, the big difference is that it is rendered as a image which means you can put it anywhere that you can put a normal image. Here are some ideas we had for using it,

  • RSS Feeds – JavaScript does not work inside RSS (most RSS readers strip it out because of XSS security issues) so the button is perfect to allow your users to read your article and then retweet it.
  • Emails – You can embed it into an HTML email to promote any link you like.
  • WordPress.com – Some sites like wordpress.com do not allow you to embed Javascript, but you can use this button instead.

Domain Count

example_counts

We wanted a way that sites could show off how much they are getting retweeted beyond just the individual story retweet counts. So we came up with the ‘Weekly Retweet’ chicklet, it shows the weekly total number of retweets for your whole website. The counter re-calculates every 24 hours and the colour can be customized (examples on the right).

Analytics

graph

Lastly we will be soon launching a much more detailed analytics package for website owners. You can already use TweetMeme to track the trend of a particular story (example here) and get the list of people who retweeted the story.

Websites can already track their weekly trends of retweets using TweetMeme (Example here) this is useful, but we wanted to give much more detail. The new package is aimed at fully understanding how your story spread and how you may adapt future story releases to take best advantage of Twitter and its amazing viral nature.

Stickers Competition Results

The results sticker competition of the sticker competition are in, and for such a short competition (less than 24 hours) we did get a lot of entries and some really great ideas, so thanks to those who spent time thinking these up and to those who obviously had nothing better to do at work that day (cough @amykate) we salute you all.

Results

We voted via a process of sticks, score cards, hand raising, Google docs spreadsheet (we are geeks remember!) each team member having between 1 and 5 points to assign to their top five favorite entries.

First Prize

sticker_first

Number: 404
Quote: Tweet Not Found
Submitted By: Sampicli (multiple people did submit this but Sampicli was first)

This was by far the clear winner, and being a very geeky reference I am sure will be very popular. For those non-geeks 404 refers to a missing webpage. The winner will receive 50 of the stickers.

Second Prize

sticker_second

Number: 69
Quote: Tweeting me, Tweeting you
Submitted By: holytshirt

Second place goes to the smutty minded, and if you don’t understand the reference I suggest you go ask mummy to explain the birds and the bees. The winner will receive 25 of the stickers.

Third Prize

sticker_third

Number: 1
Quote: to rule them all
Submitted By: Laura.2mdc

This is actually my personal favorite and I will be getting some t-shirts done up with this design as well. The reference refers to The Lord of the Rings and the One Ring that Sauran made for himself to have dominion over everyone else (very apt I thought). The winner will receive 10 of the stickers.

Honourable Mentions

There were so many others that got voted on but did not make it into the top 3 – so I have listed them below, if you want to see the full list of submissions check out the comments on the original blog post.

  • 707 tweets – iz in ur button memeing ur tweet – by asmitter
  • 2001 tweets – Just what do you think you’re doing, Dave? – by onemilliommonkeys
  • 99999 tweets – And all I got was this tweetin’ t-shirt! – by mjwysocki1975
  • 300 tweets – Tonight we tweet in hell – by onemilliommonkeys
  • 747 tweets – Jumbo Tweet – by @markabaker
  • 123 tweets – Easy as ABC – by benheymink

Thanks again to everyone who took part has been a lot of fun.

B2Evolution TweetMeme Plugin Now Available

b2evolutionToday we got a really great e-mail into our inbox!  Lee Turner who is part of the B2Evolution community has created a B2Evolution Plugin that does the equivalent to our wordpress plugin but for the B2Evolution blog engine.  This means that those users who have been asking about how to integrate our button with B2Evolution can now have a nice simple way to do so.  You’ll find all the information on how to install and use this plugin over on Lee’s TweetMeme plugin page.

Please direct any feedback of bug reports that you have back to Lee.  This still leaves us with TypePad and better Blogger integration to go.  We’re also looking into getting our plugin into WordPress.com but we will be needing the help of the community for that one as we need to know how many of our users are wanting to install it into their WordPress.com sites!  We’ll come back soon with a post for you to register your interest in the WordPress.com integration!

We’ve Added Search

We are very happy today to be releasing our Twitter real-time deep link search. (quick link: http://search.tweetmeme.com ) We have been quietly building up an infrastructure that could leverage all the work we have previously done on aggregating all the links from Twitter and deep delving those links to find content and media.

We launch today with the ability to search 15+ million links which we have deep searched for content, this not only includes the text from web pages and blog posts but also videos and images.

Although the ability to keep our index totally real-time is great we also believe that the delivery of relevance is still just as important, our default search results are based upon a clever combination of newness, retweets and some other weighting factors. This means results tend to be recent and relevant but at the same time the most popular. We do also offer search by ‘Age’. Lastly you can sort the results purely by ‘retweets’ to give you the most relevant results based upon its popularity on Twitter.

Here is a quick bullet point of the key features of our search,

  • Real-time search – our indexer picks up stories as they come out of Twitter
    • Boolean operators (& | – ! and grouping) – explained below
    • Sort by Best Match
    • Sort by Age
    • Sort by Retweet Count
  • Filtering
    • Filter by Category
    • Filter by Media (News, Images, Videos)
    • Filter by Age (recent links first)
    • Filter by Tweets (e.g. 100+ retweets)
    • Filter by Channel (e.g. apple, start-ups)
  • RSS – you can subscribe to any of the search results
  • Retweet – you can retweet the links you find without leaving the site (if you are logged in via OAuth)

Some guidelines on how to use our search -> http://help.tweetmeme.com/2009/05/11/search-guidelines/

Lastly we will soon expose the engine via our API so that other developers can leverage the results.

See what the press have said already:

Shorten It: Most popular URL shorteners (re-visited)

We’ve been continuing to keep an eye on the different URL shortener trends and thought that we would show you the effect of Twitter moving it’s default shortening service from TinyURL to Bitly.  Here at Tweetmeme, we’re constantly downloading and storing your tweets with links in, so we’re in a unique position of being able to tell you exactly how many of you are using which URL-shortening service, and how they’re competing. We’ve taken todays data from Tweetmeme , and compiled the top 5 URL shorteners to give you the graph below.

The Stats:
tinyurl.com:    44.8455%
bit.ly:    43.3557%
is.gd:    5.479%
tr.im:    3.8395%
ow.ly:    2.4803%

most_popular_url_shorteners_today_6th_may_09

We then went through our entire database of URL’s that we’ve seen and created the comparison graph of the overall stats for URL shorteners.  We’ll leave you to make your own conclusions about how influential Twitters choices are in terms of the services that they use and the impact that they have on companies.

most_popular_url_shorteners_overall

And the stats behind this one:

tinyurl.com:    67.741%
bit.ly:    20.7948%
is.gd:    4.9303%
ff.im:    3.8137%
tr.im:    2.7202%

And you too can see the latest stats from TweetMeme at the bottom of our site.  The stats update on the hour every hour.  It should be of interest to anyone wanting to use the most common url shorteners then this is a good place to find out which one really is the most commonly used one.
